Unfortunately roof repair scams are all too common.
But there are some ways for homeowners can spot roof repair scammers if you know some of the common issues. With that, here are a few common roof repair scams.
The mystery salesman
One of the most common scams is the door-to-door salesman who shows up and promises a free roof.
According to Angie’s List, “These scammers will target neighborhoods with a large number of senior citizens, older homes or where a major storm has hit. Under the disguise of a free roof inspection, the scammer will go up on the roof and fabricate damage to mimic storm damage, or present a photo showing roof damage from a different home and claim it came from the homeowner’s roof,” in order to submit fraudulent insurance claims.
Inadequate repairs
Another issue comes into play when a disreputable roofing company skimps on the work they’re supposed to do.
“Inadequate repair roofing scams are particularly difficult to spot until after the guilty party is long gone. If you know you have a problem and you find the number of a roofer who gives you a cheap quote, you may be very happy with the results for months before you realize you’ve been taken! The reason for the extra-long delay in identifying this roofing scam is camouflage: since many of the problems that occur with roofs are actually below the surface, it is easy for someone to make a show of putting on new shingles without remedying the actual issue at fault,” according to HomeAdvisor.
Downpayment disappearances
Another common scam is when a company demands a downpayment and then doesn’t show up to do the work.
“A common roofing scam occurs when a company agrees to replace a roof, but requires a down payment before starting the work. The company will say it needs the down payment to buy materials or to pay for labor, but it never returns once the check is in hand. In most cases, the company will convince the homeowner to sign over or cash an insurance check as a down payment and then disappear,” according to Angie’s List.
The best way to avoid any of these scams is to work with a reputable roofer.
