When it’s time for roof repairs, the materials used can make a lot of difference.
In general, high-quality materials will last longer and lead to fewer roof repairs down the line. Here’s a look at some of the top materials and what you can expect from them.
Composite shingle
Composite shingles are the most common material for roof repairs. But there’s wide variance when it comes to how long they will last.
According to The Spruce, composite shingles can last anywhere from 15-50 years.
“While they might poop out in as little as 15 years, composite shingles are cheap to purchase and install. Longevity predictions for composite/asphalt shingles vary wildly because the quality of this popular material varies wildly,” according to The Spruce.
Metal roofing
Metal roofing can last from 45 to 75 years. Metal is generally a little more expensive than composite shingles, but is attractive because it is lightweight, durable and recyclable.
“They’re sleek, lightweight, long-lasting and recyclable, and something to consider if you’re interested in rainwater harvesting,” architect Amy A. Alper tells HGTV.
Slate
Slate is probably the most durable roofing product, though it is also costly and heavy.
According to The Spruce, “Slate roofs from Shakespeare’s time are still holding tight. Slate is real stone, laid down thick on the roof. But adequate truss strength is required to hold up this heavy load.”
